This weekend, I was in a crafty mood, so I got the idea to use a straw wreath frame that had been lying around in the basement for a while and decorate it up with my favorite flower, the peony, and the bright colors- pink and green- of my mom’s college: Sweet Briar. Recently, Sweet Briar College, a women’s college near Lynchburg, VA, suddenly announced in March that the historic school was closing after last year’s school year.
So many generations in my family (my mom, my aunt, my grandmother, my great-aunt, my great-grandmother, great-great aunt…) had gone there and had it so close to their hearts that my family was absolutely surprised and devastated when we heard. In the past few months, there has been so much of an effort to keep the college open for future generations of women that the issue went to the Virginia Supreme Court. Also, Sweet Briar alumnae started the Saving Sweet Briar movement to raise money and awareness to save the school.
Anyway, we have a sign in our front yard and the colorful wreath now on our front door to encourage the efforts. (And I might publish another handmade wreath coming soon so that my grandmother can have something pink and green for her front door.) 😉 Click below to read more and help the cause.
