Soft Pastel Still Life

Completed Date: 10/8/14

Medium: soft pastel

Description: This was one of the first pieces we did from observation this year. It was so funny because this still life was set up so nicely with such interesting objects that I had such a hard time choosing with area to study. I finally decided that I couldn’t ignore the beautiful Grecian-style urn, though. Plus, I loved the flowers and plants. It took a long time, but I really enjoyed this drawing. Still, after looking at it as a finished piece, I don’t really like how each part seems to conflict with the other parts. I feel like I don’t really know where to focus. Next time I do a still life, I think I want to focus more on lighting so that I don’t use the same value scales throughout the piece. In the end, even though the medium is messy, I’ve decided that soft pastels are probably my favorite medium to work with. I love the smooth texture and nice feel.

Awesome painting Mamie! Just love how you mastered soft pastels and I think you nailed the light in this piece, value ranges are gorgeously managed. Bravo!!
