Childhood Memory

Completed Date: 9/3/13

Medium: mixed media

Description: When I was little, my best friend was Will. Adults called him “special” and different from normal children, but to me, we didn’t seem so unalike. We both loved running around on the playground, sucking honeysuckle together at recess, and grinding fairy dust in the rock garden to share for good luck. On some afternoons, I used to go over to his house so that he could teach me how to play Mario video games while I pretended to teach him school on his mom’s cool whiteboard. Even though Will didn’t use words the same way I did, we still understood each other, and for a while, no one could tear us apart. After first grade, I moved away from my home, and soon after, Will moved away to a school for children with Asperger’s, a deep form of autism. As the years went by, we lost touch with each other, but the friendship we formed continues to endure in my memories. He helped me learn that society is not always right about the boxes it places around certain people and ideas, and in this way, he helped me break out of my confined box of ideas and start to grow.
