Description: As the last painting in my AP Art concentration (finally!), I decided to paint a group of male dancers from the Western-themed ballet Rodeo. When I first started, I barely knew anything about the ballet, but I remember it standing out in my mind when I read a picture book a long time ago about famous ballets. I remember thinking it was funny for someone to create a ballet, which are usually so high-cultured and posh, to such a casual, Western story. It almost seems like it has the story and enthusiasm of a musical with the discipline and technique of a ballet.
The ballet, with music by Aaron Copland and choreography by Agnes de Mille, premiered at the Metropolitan Opera House with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. The story is about a young, American tomboy/cowgirl who has much talent and spunk but not much femininity, which is what most of the guys in her area are looking for at the time. With loud, exciting sounds and distinct instruments, the music of the ballet presents such originality, and with all the high jumps and fun movements, the dancers seem like they are flying through the western sky. It makes you just want to grab your lasso, jump on a horse, and gallop off into the distance! Yahoo!!! (I guess I just wanted to end my huge series of paintings for my AP Art concentration with a big, loud bang!)
