Description: This past year, I chose the topic Ballet in Art as my concentration for AP Art, and how could I paint classic ballets without painting The Nutcracker? Impossible! I think almost everyone knows the story because it is probably the one ballet that most people know about and the one ballet that most people think of when they think of ballet in general.
With the beautiful story of the young girl, Clara, receiving a magical toy from her mysterious godfather, Drosselmeyer, for Christmas and going on a dreamlike journey to the glorious Land of Sweets, this ballet always excites many people every December. Surprisingly, though, when the ballet first came out in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892, very few appreciated its greatness. The now-famous ballet only achieved its great popularity years later in 1954 when George Balanchine staged the ballet for the New York City Ballet. Today, I know for sure that the ballet’s famous composer Tchaikovsky and its famous choreographer Marius Petipa would be extremely proud.
