Romeo and JulietCompleted Date: 12/20/12

Medium: acrylic

Description: This painting is my first piece for my concentration (a series of paintings with a similar style and theme) for AP Art. My inspiration for the style came from Degas and Chagall, and I chose the ballet Romeo and Juliet to set the mood and story.

Here, Romeo holds Juliet close to him as she gently strokes the petal of a blooming flower. They are immersed with love and passion for each other but also apprehension and fear in a dark, nighttime scene because they know that they will only be together for so long. In dark purples and greens, the lotus flower represents purity, beauty, eternity, and more specifically what their love could have become. Romeo is clad in dark red, a strong and sensual color, while Juliet is bathed in light peaches, a soft and gentle color. The painting is supposed to be dreamlike and surreal with simple shapes and colors to show movement and unity.

I love this! What a cool idea of combining the influences of both Degas and Chagall! They are so very different and you did a wonderful job bringing both energies to this piece. It is so dreamlike and the emotions are very powerful….Kartika
