Surprisingly to me, I loved this movie! When I was watching the trailer, I thought, “eh… another one of those so-so nature movies,” but Big Miracle really blew me away! The movie tactfully brought together so many different viewpoints and changed my original perspective about the whale family. At first, I thought that three trapped whales didn’t really matter in the scheme of things, but I didn’t realize how complicated the issue could get with tons of politics and PR tagging along. What really warmed my heart, though, is that by the end, everyone really does care about the one little family of whales. If we become objective to one tragedy, it becomes harder and harder to understand and feel the pain of others. With this movie, though, the story will definitely touch your heart. Even though it may seem that this movie is all about whales, it truly has more to do with people as it pulls its audience in. One thing I loved is that a lot of it involves a group of native Alaskans, and much of it is told by a young Inuit who is a friend of the reporter. You really get to see how the native people both hunted and revered the giant creatures, and I liked how this point of view is seen. Overall, the wonderful actors, beautiful filmography, touching characters, and even a bit of humor and romance make Big Miracle a movie you won’t want to miss. It’s even better to know that it’s based on a true story!
Reminded me of: the movies Hoot and Free Willy
